Are you are ready to up-level as a leader but don't know how? We've got you!
In this article, we continue to uncover the 21 qualities showcased in my new book, Healing Leadership: How to Lead, Love, and Thrive in Business and Life, published in April 2021.
During the interviews with 41 industry leaders, we uncovered these qualities so that you can increase your confience, remove the self-doubt, and develop a growth mindset to advance and support your team to deliver on the organization's objectives.
In previous articles, we discussed the first seven qualities that healing and empowering leaders must possess to not only survive but thrive in these times of uncertainty:
Communicate powerfully, including listening.
Show empathy and high emotional intelligence.
Value and empower their team.
Set the vision.
Are flexible.
Are Transparent.
Manage and lead through change.
In this article, we discuss leadership quality #8: Builds trust. Are you ready? Here we go.
How to Build Trust and Solve Problems
Today, we face many different challenges, from reintegrating our workforce to continuing to engage our employees to the highest possible level.
We also need to ensure that we meet the needs of our clients and the stakeholders relying on our services and products., and the world economy is constantly shifting.
An inclusive leader builds trust.
I thought about this for a while, and reflected on, "Who have been those leaders that I trusted so much, and what were some of their qualities? What was it about them that I trusted?"
I've been lucky to have been led by great leaders from the inception of working full time, where I felt that the leader had my back. That's the #1 characteristic that I can recall.
Whether it was at the beginning of my career when I was 22 and graduated as a programmer working for Prudential, or later on when I became a systems manager after getting my MBA, that remained true.
Trustworthy Leaders Have Your Back
The leaders I trusted had my back, and as I became a more senior leader, reporting into the director of investments and operations Techcnology and later into the chief information officer, the same applied.
When problems came up, I had the freedom to go into my leader's office and talk with them about the challenge that I was facing. They always looked out for me; they opened doors, they removed obstacles so I could get the job done well.
Are you that type of leader?
During more than 26 years working in the corporate world, I mainly reported into the technology department. I remember one particular invident when one of the business stakeholders in one of my projects went to my manager complaining about me.
The main concern was that maybe I was too pushy in asking for the information we needed for the project. As my my manager gave me the feedback, I got it, and he also shared that he dedended me by saying, "That's her job. That's what she's supposed to do as a project manager. Her job is to make sure that nothing falls through the cracks."
I heeded the feedback and used it to develop more finness in my pushiness, LOL. But by sharing that with me, my manager let me know that he had my back and that he would defend me in the process of doing my job. His actions, made me trust him even more as my leader.
Are you going to bat for your employees?
Do they feel that they can trust you because "what you say" and "what you do" is congruent?
Are you sticking up for your team members?
Are you communicating their role to others who may not understand?
Are you valuing them and empowering them to do their job?
Those are all characteristics of leaders who build trust.
Trustworthy Leaders Listen Powerfully
Another way to build trust is to listen powerfully.
When we ask a question and stop to listen, not only waiting for your turn to speak, but actually listening to what they're saying and responding, or simply hearing them out, that also develops trust and helps people know that you are a safe leader. It shows them you are someone who they can speak with whenever something comes up and they need support.
Trustworthy Leaders are Self-Aware
On many occasions, leaders are walking around with blinders on. That doesn't mean that they're bad people. It may simply mean that they don't have the skillset to behave differently.
They may lack the self-awareness to notice how their behavior is impacting the people around them.
Are you aware of how your behavior is building trust with the people around you?
When you sit down to think about it, you might notice that you're not building trust. If anything, you may be creating confusion, sending mixed messages, not being transparent about the decisions that you're making and why those decisions are important.
When you do a self-assessment, ask yourself:
Am I trustworthy?
Are my employees coming to me with questions, or are they holding back?
Are they afraid to bring up a problem because they are afraid of how I will react instead of respond?
When people feel safe and are in a good place, they will do their best. Their performance is a huge sign and evidence of that.
Of course, there's always the question of, do you have the right team in place? As leaders, it takes a great deal of courage to acknowledge that and have a brave conversation with an employee, to let them know that they're not a good fit for the team--if that's the case. To give you strength to have these types of conversations, remember that if they not thriving on your team, they could be thriving on another team.
And as a leader, when we are self-aware, and we look around, and we see the results that we're getting, that is our sign of whether or not we're doing a great job.
How do you relate to these behaviors?
If you or your team is struggling, floundering in survival mode, and feeling stressed, let's start by looking at you first, which will give you a great deal of insight, and then assess how to move forward constructively.
