Quality #6: How to be transparent and get people on the same page

This article continues to uncover the 21 qualities showcased in Healing Leadership: How to Lead, Love, and Thrive in Business and Life. Today, we cover the 6th quality: transparency.

During the interviews with 41 diverse industry leaders and experts, we uncovered these qualities, which support you to increase your confidence, remove self-doubt, and develop a growth mindset to advance as a leader and help your team deliver on critical objectives.

People tend to feel frustrated when faced with a lack of transparency.

When leaders make decisions and choices, and we are unaware of the rationale behind those decisions, it can feel very frustrating. It can also be disempowering when those choices don't make sense--unless we have proper context and the leader's information that drove them to those conclusions.

Leading with transparency applies to work and our personal lives.

When I'm planning something with my family, and I share that we're going to go in a direction and explain my rationale, 99.99 percent of the time they get on board--they understand it, and it makes sense to them. Sharing the plan and motivation gives them certainty.

Similarly, in our business, clients, employees, teams need certainty.

When people feel certainty, they take action.

When we don't have certainty, we hesitate. We get stuck. We feel disempowered.

Share information with your team about the strategy you are coming up with, its rationale, how their work fits into it, and the crucial role they have to play in making that strategy successful.

By being transparent, you'll identify when your team is not on board, do something to address their concerns, and move forward constructively. In that case, that is going to get you their buy-in.

That's the value of developing the skill of transparency as a leader.

Transparency requires vulnerability.

In many instances, we have to make the best of the worst scenarios when making business decisions. The options are often not ideal. But we still must make a decision.

When you are open, which requires vulnerability, about why you're going with a decision that is not ideal but is the best of the worst, people can also get behind you.

When you are transparent, you may receive more feedback that could help you tweak your decision and how you move forward.

It's also essential to keep your ego in check.

If we are making decisions and don't have any wiggle room or flexibility, we may neglect to address a viable option because our ego said, "I made this decision, and this is where I'm going."

As you go through your day-to-day business and personal dealings, remember that a healing and empowering leader is transparent.
