Today, we're ready to discuss leadership quality #14: How your creativity and resourcefulness can help you become a better leader

A healing and empowering leader is creative and resourceful.

What does a creative and resourceful leader look like for you?

To a great extent, the source of my resourcefulness today emanates from living and growing up in a third-world country until the age of 14. For example, growing up, we didn't have gadgets for everything, i.e., can openers, nutcrackers, non-slip jar openers, unlike the tools accessible to us now living in the United States.

Back in the Dominican Republic, I remember improvising and getting creative to open cans using knives, crack open nuts using rocks, and softening the jar lids utilizing the heat from the gas stove.

This way of thinking, which was non-linear and sometimes indirect, translated to my career as well. When obstacles surfaced, the question at hand was "How can I address this?" without taking new solutions off the table.

How have you been creative in your career?

How have you come up with creative solutions for problems you were trying to solve as a team?

How have you gotten creative to solve challenges in your life?

One of the benefits of embracing the quality of being creative and resourceful is that you look for alternatives when things don't work out as expected.

There are always options available when you are resourceful.

Here's a self-assessment. Notice how you react when things don't go as you had planned. Do you typically throw in the towel, e.g., do you say we're not doing it because it didn't happen in this way? Or do you pivot and claim you're going to try something different because of the change in circumstances?

How are you role modeling resourcefulness and creativity for the people you lead?

Your team is always watching and noticing your behaviors. As they watch you, they learn what's acceptable, expected, and what is not. Help your leaders expand outside of the norm as it relates to creativity and resourcefulness. And one of the most effective ways to accomplish that is through role modeling.

If you have a younger team, they're learning from you how to operate in the business world, which is a considerable responsibility when you look at it that way.

On the other hand, if your team members are more advanced in their careers and have more experience, your behaviors also role-model for them what's expected. People tend to do what their leaders do, and that's the expectation.

The same expectation is also the danger. Because if you have a senior leader who is not embodying the behaviors you want in your work culture, i.e., creativity and resourcefulness, that's a real problem.

Communicate when behaviors are not well-aligned with your expectations

In the scenario where leaders are not embodying the target behaviors, consider having a heart-to-heart conversation to help them increase their self-awareness about how the behavior they're exuding is impacting the culture and the people. These difficult conversations are needed and doable, although not always easy.

To facilitate these heart-to-heart exchanges, use conscious and mindful communication.

How? Approach your leaders with a spirit of contributing to them. Instead of criticizing, it's constructive to create a safe space to have that conversation. Share your intention for sharing the feedback and for improving the workplace and positive results and outcomes.

As you continue to practice creativity and resourcefulness, consciously, you'll develop this valuable leadership skill, which will help you grow as a leader and reach your full leadership potential.
